A Romantic History

June 30, 2009

As with other things around the world, like fashion, food and technology, romance has come a long long way. As times change so do the ways of expressing emotions and feelings. While the essence of the emotion for romance, love, stays the same, actions and expressions have changed tremendously over the years.

In the ancient world, arranged marriages were the norm, and alliances were formed for property and politics. There probably was not much scope for romance, other than the secret affairs.

The medieval days brought with them the long lasting acts of chivalry, always associated with romantic gestures. Some of which have stood the test of time and are still considered romantic are small things like buying a woman dinner and opening doors.

True romance probably flourished in the Victorian era. Courting, serenading, poetry and gifts became an integral part of the romantic affair.

And in today’s day and age romance would be incomplete without the use of technology to get closer to your loved ones. As new traditions of romance come up, there are still some that weather the storm of change and are as popular even today like gifting flowers and chocolates. No matter how you express yourself the basic emotion always has and will stay the same.

Chocolate has been had in the form of bars or hot chocolate drinks, but how often does one think of a chocolate bath or chocolate money? An odd thought but true. At the time of the Aztecs, apart from being a luxury item, chocolate was also used as currency in Central America. The Aztecs used chocolate money to buy anything from a rabbit to a slave and pay for them with cacao beans, price ranging from 5 upto a hundred and more beans.
They also believed it to have medicinal qualities. The Aztecs believed it built up resistance and fought fatigue, and was good for skin complexion.
The chocolate drink was also popular in 18th century England as a cure for stomach aches. But one of the most popular effects of chocolate is as an aphrodisiac, although there is evidence to point that way.
Another use of chocolate is the chocolate massage. Some belive that chocolate improves the texture and tone of the skin and so spas all over the world give this exotic massage to rejuvenate the skin and muscles.

The most unusual use of chocolate by far would be in fashionwear. A few innovative and adventurous designers have come up with chocolate corsets, tops and dresses. Also popular, though not as bizarre are the chocolate sculptures, from a humble fountain to a life size Mercedes-Benz, these are more often seen as decorative items.
