As with other things around the world, like fashion, food and technology, romance has come a long long way. As times change so do the ways of expressing emotions and feelings. While the essence of the emotion for romance, love, stays the same, actions and expressions have changed tremendously over the years.
In the ancient world, arranged marriages were the norm, and alliances were formed for property and politics. There probably was not much scope for romance, other than the secret affairs.
The medieval days brought with them the long lasting acts of chivalry, always associated with romantic gestures. Some of which have stood the test of time and are still considered romantic are small things like buying a woman dinner and opening doors.
True romance probably flourished in the Victorian era. Courting, serenading, poetry and gifts became an integral part of the romantic affair.
And in today’s day and age romance would be incomplete without the use of technology to get closer to your loved ones. As new traditions of romance come up, there are still some that weather the storm of change and are as popular even today like gifting flowers and chocolates. No matter how you express yourself the basic emotion always has and will stay the same.
